Break On Through

If I had to pick one band, I’d choose them….for so many reasons. My lifelong, bewildering attraction to everything rebellious. My youthful, sentimental association with the albums. And of course….the music. To me, the music purist, with very few exceptions, all the pieces of the puzzle have to be there. So when Jim Morrison died in 1971, the “band”, for all intents and purposes was officially over. Oh, the remaining members did put out a couple of albums without Jim but it wasn’t them. That being said, I did go see the three of them when they were around with Ian Astbury of the Cult (why oh why did they/he do that?) and I’ve gone to a few “tribute’ shows when I needed their songs live and loud. Never got to see them when Jim was alive but just hearing and seeing the three remaining members on stage was, for me, awe inducing. I don’t believe in coincidence so when I read (pronounced “reed”) that Ray Manzarek “ran into” his old UCLA classmate, Jim Morrison “by chance” on Venice Beach, California, I think “that’s bullsh*t”. They were meant to get together. They were meant to form a band. And we were meant to hear them. Jim Morrison, Ray Manzarek, Robbie Krieger and John Densmore all uniquely fit together to produce one sound. Well, now they’ve lost virtuoso keyboardist Ray Manzarek. 74. Bile duct cancer.
