It Is With Great Sadness….

and just about burst with rock and roll bliss. In mere minutes, Alvin Lee of Ten Years After would be twenty feet in front of me. He and his guitar, his bass player and drummer. For a good part of the show I was one of probably four people up and dancing. And screaming. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! He even acknowledged me at one point (how could he not….crazy blonde bouncing around like a freak). The German audience was mostly reserved until the encore and then everyone got up and rushed the stage, dancing in the aisles. It was unbelievably fun, worth every cent. He's scheduled to do a show with Johnny Winter in Paris in April of this year. I asked for time off to go to the show and my boss said yes. It would have to be a quick trip but I was seriously considering it. I haven't been to France yet and I'd like to go and can you imagine, Alvin Lee AND Johnny Winter on the same stage on the same night! I'd been checking air fares and hotels on line from time to time, looking at prices, wondering if I could financially swing it. Man, that would have been a good show. One of my friends and co-workers came into the studio a few minutes ago and gave me the news. Alvin Lee passed away today due to complications from a routine surgical procedure. He was 68. An amazing, no bullshit guitar player with a one of a kind rock and roll voice. My thoughts go out to his family and friends….and to all of us who grew up in the brilliance of his work.
