NBC Beatles Mini-Series Experiencing Setbacks

392279 07: (FILE PHOTO) The Beatles (L to R) Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, John Lennon and George Harrison wave to fans July 2, 1964 as they return to London from a tour of Australia. It was reported November 8, 2001 that Harrison is undergoing cancer treatment in a Staten Island, NY hospital. The 58-year-old ex-Beatle was diagnosed with lung cancer and a brain tumor earlier this year.
The rumored NBC Beatles mini-series hasn’t even gotten off the ground yet, and it’s already facing a number of setbacks.

Per Billboard, the mini-series hasn’t secured music or likeness rights for the project, and on top of that, Sony Pictures Television is in the process of creating a competing project.

Considering that NBC would have to get approval of Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, as well as the estates of John Lennon and George Harrison, to simply film a mini-series about the band, it looks like viewers will have to wait a long time for this project to even start production.

Add securing music rights on top of that (which ought to cost a pretty penny), you can’t help but wonder whether NBC would want to invest that kind of money into a project.

While any Beatles series would garner ratings, is it really a “Beatles series” without the music?  That would be a hard-sell for any network!
