Woodstock 50th Anniversary Festival In The Works

BETHEL, NY - AUGUST 14: A plaque marks the original site location as the 40th anniversary of the Woodstock music festival approaches August 14, 2009 in Bethel, New York. On August 15-17 in 1969 an estimated 400,000 music fans gathered on Max Yasgur's farm in Bethel, N.Y. for the most celebrated music festival ever. The 40th anniversary concert will take place tomorrow.
Though the Woodstock festival's 45th anniversary will likely pass this year without much mention, the same won't be true for its 50th anniversary in 2019.

Co-founder Michael Lang tells Rolling Stone magazine that plans are under way for the festival's 50th, saying that, "We're starting to think about it now" and that he's exploring a variety of concepts and locations. Woodstock did have a successful 25th anniversary in 1994, but the 30th anniversary in 1999 was mired in controversy, including a riot on the final night.

Lang considered a 40th anniversary in 2009 in Brooklyn but backed off due to a lack of sponsors. The original Woodstock Music & Art Fair took place August 15-18 in Bethel, N.Y., on a site that now houses a performing arts center.
