Eric Clapton Headlining JJ Cale Tribute Album

Eric Clapton
is spearheading a new tribute album for his friend and frequent collaborator, the late JJ Cale.

"The Breeze: An Appreciation of JJ Cale" is due out July 29 featuring performances of Cale classics by Clapton along with Tom Petty, Mark Knopfler, Derek Trucks, Willie Nelson, John Mayer and others.

In a statement announcing the album, Clapton said that, "I would like people to tap into what JJ Cale did -- that's the point. I'm just the messenger; I've always felt that's my job. I try to interpret things so that the public at large, or at least the people who listen to what I do, will become intrigued about where I got it from."

Clapton has recorded Cale songs throughout his career, including "After Midnight," "Cocaine," "I'll Make Love to You Anytime," "Travelin' Light" and "Angel." The two won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album in 2006 for their joint album, "the Road to Escondido."
