Sting & Paul Simon Talk New Tour

Sting and Paul Simon launched their On Stage Together road trip on Saturday (February 8) in Houston with a two-hour and 45-minute show that lived up to the tour's title.

The two musicians played 10 of the concert's 30 numbers together, opening with Sting's "Brand New Day," Simon's "Boy in the Bubble" and then Sting's "Fields of Gold."

The duo used other collaborations -- on Sting's "Love is the Seventh Wave" and "Fragile," Simon's "Mother and Child Reunion" and Simon & Garfunkel's "The Boxer" -- as segues between their individual sets, while Sting also covers S&G's "America."

The two headliners' band members played in mixed configurations throughout the night, and the show ended with an encore of the Police's "Every Breath You Take," Simon's "Late in the Evening" and Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water."

Prior to the concert, Simon and Sting told us that playing a lot of songs together was always the game plan for the show.

Simon: "We said from the beginning that we really had to do at least eight songs together...a significant amount of songs together. And then we sort of started out with the usual thing of, 'We'll open and then we'll do a set and then we'll do a thing (together) and there'll be another set and then we'll close. Then it evolved into, 'No, let’s not break it that way. Let's, you know, do it together and then do, like, 25 minutes and then a little thing (together) and then somebody does 25 minutes and then we do a thing and then 30 minutes and a little things so that...it keeps sort of changing in sort of 25- to 35-minute intervals, with duets in between and the band members melding with each other during the set, and I think that that will continue to happen throughout the whole tour. By the time we end up we will be a much more integrated unit than we are now, and we're pretty integrated now."

Sting: "It's fascinating to watch. They're all great musicians and enjoy sparking off each other...We're gonna learn a lot tonight and tomorrow will be a little more. It's an adventure."

Sting and Simon play 19 more shows together, finishing March 16 in Orlando, Fla. After the tour Sting will be getting his new musical, "The Last Ship," ready to open during June in Chicago, while Simon will return to working on his next album.
