I originally wrote this in 2010 but in honor of dear friends colonoscopy I will repost.
The other day I finally got around to getting my doctors gift for my fiftieth birthday. It’s really great. You go in for your annual check up and the doctor ( in my case a very nice nurse practioner) says “hey guess what, for your birthday I’m going to let one of my colleagues stick a camera up your rear end”. What fun. Now I know it’s a very necessary preventative screening but, that did not build my anticipation. So for your reading pleasure I’m going to give you the details I know you so badly don’t want.

The question was posed as follows: “What is the best exercise for weight loss?” I posted what I thought was a humorous answer. I answered that the best exercise for weight loss in my mind is called a table pushaway. Surprisingly enough, the next post on the forum was “Does anyone know how to do a table pushaway?”
I guess most people don’t get my sense of humor. What I was trying to get people to understand is that the simplest way to lose weight is to simply push away from the table. This act alone will do more for weight loss than both running and weight training put together - bottom line. Most people eat too much. On top of that, they eat at the wrong times and they eat the wrong foods. It is ...

A Long Slow Walk to Nowhere

This is Part 2 of my series based on my visit to a commercial fitness facility. In Part 1, we covered weight training. To review, look at what everyone else is doing and, don’t do it. It’s pretty simple. The Charles Staley 180 Principle. If everyone is benching, you should be thinking more rows. Just keep thinking, do the opposite. If a guy works arms for an hour, you should do legs. Just a thought. How many people walked by you on their hands today? My guess is that unless you went to the circus, it was zero.
With regard to cardio, the same is true. I hate the term “cardio.” Most of the people in the gym the day I visited were on what I like to call “the long slow walk to nowhere”. Even if I liked the term cardio, what these people were doing would best be ...

The Most Important "Operation" You May Ever Have

I’ve got a news flash that will change the world of fitness and training forever! I discovered an essential new operation that is life-changing. The operation is called an addanasstomy. Luckily, you can perform this operation on yourself without the aid of a doctor. In an addanasstomy, we take the average gluteless bench press addicted trainee and we begin an intensive program of squats and lunges to attempt to increase the size of the gluteus maximus. Hence the name: Add an Ass to Me (or, in this case, really Add an Ass to You).
It’s funny. In fitness, we always seem to be trying to lose something. Most of the time it seems to be around the waist. The truth is that most people need to lose a little in front and gain a little in the back. Don’t always think about taking away; think about adding a little, but ...

Most People Are Dead at 35

I was listening to Paul Chek’s nutrition CDs the other day and Chek used the following quote from a nutritionist: “Most people are dead at thirty-five; they just walk around for another thirty to forty more years.” The quote was intended to apply to most adults from a nutritional standpoint. I find the point both amusing and accurate from a physical standpoint also. By thirty-five, most of the damage is done and without an intensive program of exercise, the damage is difficult to reverse.
The truth is that quality of life begins to deteriorate after thirty for many people due to lack of exercise. Activities that were once simple and normal become increasingly difficult. The sad part is that the deterioration doesn’t become readily apparent until the fifties or sixties, and at this point, it gets much harder to change. The baby boomers are fueling the personal training business in ...

Joining a Health Club

This is the first installment in a series designed to get everyone angry with me. Today we look at the concept of joining a health club or fitness center. The progression of the club environment in my lifetime has been an interesting one. We have progressed from the early gyms that were simply places with weights inhabited by this subculture of those who lifted them. Most who lifted weights were considered a bit odd. Females were seen with the frequency of unicorns. The next generation of gyms was also the first of the supposed miracles: The Nautilus Center. I think most of us over forty at one time or another belonged to a small storefront-type Nautilus center that had a row of twelve machines and promised a miracle. The lesson was, and still is, if it appears too good to be true, it probably is. I don’t believe any Nautilus ...
