My daughter and I went to the Wilbur Theatre Saturday afternoon to see a little band called "Port Chuck". If you're not familiar with them well then, you must not watch General Hospital! Four actors from the show front a band. All four sing and quite well, I might add! It was a blast….in a twelve year old kind of way. Port Chuck played some of the same stuff you hear on WROR: lots of 60's, 70's and 80's songs, a few recent things thrown in and one original that sounded a lot like Eurythmics' "Here Comes the Rain Again"….and of course they closed with Rick Springfield's "Jessie's Girl". Hilarious! And yea, that was me who yelled "I love you Spinelli" during a ballad which made the nearly sold out, mostly female audience swoon…ah puberty!

Whatever...

Saturday, beautiful day; spent the morning at my new favorite place, http://www.blazing-saddles.net/; went riding, saw a deer run by in the woods! You remember how nice it was Saturday, perfect day to roll down the windows while out doing errands; or push button the windows down cos I have electric windows in my Jeep Cherokee, which I hate, but I digress. So, windows down, a little breezy on the highway, push the stupid button to put the windows back up; the passenger side window…not budging. Push Push Push….ok, so, like you probably do, I pay attention to the weather forecast and I know coming in Sunday into Monday, windswept, torrential downpours. Now, mind you, it hasn't rained in forever. Ok, whatever. I get home, plastic up the window and plan to drop the jeep at the shop Monday morning. All night last night I wake up intermittently, listening to the ...

4.18.12

Last week I wore a couple of suits to work and people were wondering why cos I usually dress fairly casually; I mean, it's radio; who really sees me except Doyle?! Well, I've been doing some cleaning and digging around in the back of my closets and I realized I've been "saving" things…not wearing or using them; just letting them take up space. Do you "save" things? That special bottle of perfume or pretty candle sitting on the shelf collecting dust, the "guest soap" in the bathroom, $50 pair of silk panties in your drawer that have yet to see the dark of night. Is it only women who do this or do men "save" things, too? Why do we do this? Every day I drive into work on Morrissey Boulevard and I guess I hadn't heard all the details in the news yesterday cos when I drove in I ...

Legalize It….All of It

I'd like to take this opportunity to piss a lot of people off. It's not my intention but I know it will because I've had this discussion with others and that's usually what happens. So, apparently Pat Robertson (????) wants to legalize marijuana http://www.azfamily.com/news/Evangelical-TV-host-Pat-Robertson-recommends-legalizing-marijuana-142015723.html. Fantastic! That's a great start! But why stop there. Let's legalize everything….e v e r y t h I n g. Because, let's face it, how hard is it, really to find all these illegal drugs? I bet I could do it in less than an hour and I haven't taken anything in years. I recently watched the PBS series on Prohibition http://www.pbs.org/kenburns/prohibition/ and there's a part in the show where this guy makes a comment about human beings wanting to do something even more when they're told not to; he said something like, "if brushing your teeth was illegal, people would be sneaking around brushing ...

Five Years Gone

I remember being in one of my friends cars, some old sh*tbox, back in the day, driving around, wasting gas, listening to to music. I don't remember if the 8 track was hers or mine; either way, this had just come out and whenever I hear it, it brings me back to that particular moment. Enjoy:

It's not that I was this huge Monkees fan but they were such a part of my childhood. Like most people my age, I watched their goofy TV show Saturday mornings and even owned their first album and the "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone" "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You" and "Valerie" 45s. I still have them and have since bought their second album. The Monkees were camp, light hearted, fun….and cute. They weren't the Beatles or the Stones or the Animals or Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels or the Beau Brummels….but they were a facet of the creativity of the time. And for a young girl in Spokane Washington who eventually dropped out of high school in Sanford Maine and somehow wound up with the best job in the world, ...

Well, At Least it's not a Root Canal

I'd be hard pressed to find two words that strike more fear than ROOT CANAL. Cue: evil looking doctor with supersized drill. Enter: peripheral people with painful horror stories. Result: suffering for a week with a disabling toothache. Solution 1: a good endodontist. Solution 2: a root canal Result: pain gone, gone, gone, tooth intact. Realization: root canals are like getting an extra-large filling. A friend of mine called to ask if I wanted him to come with me on the designated day. I said yes (big baby). He sat out in the waiting room for the approximately 50 to 60 minute procedure. I don't think he came with me to comfort me, I think he was there to say "I told you so" afterwards. He's had some experience with the root canal and knew my fear was tied to the myth. It's not 1960 anymore when the only reason ...

HEY MICKEY…as in MOUSE…

Got mice? I've lived in the same place almost 9 years and I see the occasional mouse dropping and have even seen an actual mouse scamper by as the temperature drops outside and food gets more scarce but I have never had a mouse eat an entire two pound bag of brown sugar or every chip in a full bag of Nestle's chocolate chips. I wishI were kidding. Now, at first I set up my "have a heart" traps; you know, the traps that just catch the mice and then you take them outside for a nice, long walk and let them go…they're a bit disoriented but still have their little lives intact. But after what I am now referring to as "the brown sugar incident", I've put a bounty on their tiny heads. I spent all day yesterday tearing my kitchen cupboards apart, thoroughly washing them, throwing out anything ...

Whitney

My daughter texted me Saturday night: "Whitney Houton's dead". I was never a fan of her music but always a fan of hers. She was so talented, sassy, beautiful, human. From the outside, her relationship with Bobby Brown had domestic abuse written all over it (re: control) but what do I know about someone else's private life. One thing pretty much everyone knows is that she had the affliction of addiction. Addiction is a deadly disease. It can be kept in remission but one has to be vigilant and in our "take a pill to fix everything" society, that can be challenging to say the least. We're all familiar with the media attention given to getting a flu shot; I wonder why there isn't the same outcry given to the disease of addiction. Every day in Massachusetts we lose two people to opiate addiction. It is an epidemic. Is it ...

JOHN BONHAM LIVES

Halloween night, Wilbur Theatre, Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience. I saw the ad months ago and thought "wow, I'd love to go…but it's on a school night." Well, it turns out, I've kinda fallen off the "must be in bed by 8:30" wagon so I gave myself permission to stay up really late Monday and boy am I glad I did. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen. Hearing Jason Bonham say Led Zeppelin was more than "Stairway to Heaven" and proceed to demonstrate that with the band, being there for the intimate stories about growing up a rock god's son, seeing old, personal Bonham family footage…what an experience. I won't compare the father to the son because I don't think it's fair or realistic. We all occupy our own space. However, Jason, for sure, is a hell of a drummer in his own right and ...
